She was always more comfortable with her toys than with people. That natural inclination became more pronounced after she became her parents' only child. Her older brother Jude was killed in a car crash. She was sitting in the seat next to him at the time. Though Julie didn't realize it, her mutant power first manifested then. She tried to take control of the car when it became uncontrollable. Julie couldn't prevent the crash, but she would continue to develop her psionic ability to interface with and control technology. Julie developed a fascination with science and technology, studying physics in school. Her parents were very proud when she got a degree in physics. They weren't aware the science wasn't Julie's only passion; there was alien technology too. She began, after her brother's death, to collect technology -- especially any piece she could "hear" not merely functioning along basic lines but in ways 21st century human technology couldn't. What brought Julie to Torchwood 3 wasn't curiosity. It was a piece of alien technology she knew, from what it whispered to her, needed to be kept locked away. While Julie didn't recognize she had a mutant ability, she merely thought of herself as having a gift, Captain Jack Harkness suspected there was more to it and recruited her. She adored working for Torchwood 3. If Julie had known when she joined she'd become lost in time and space while working there it wouldn't have deterred her. Knowing how she'd have to watch Dylan Singer die, and she'd have to fight for her life against the technology that killed him might have given her pause. The pause would've been broken with the knowledge Dylan and she would survive. Julie passed through the temporal-spatial Rift that runs through Cardiff with Dylan. They landed in the 51st century. Julie and Dylan attempted to return home to the 21st century repeatedly through fissures from the Rift. Each of their attempts only took them farther and farther from home. Among the many things that happened to them while they were trying to get home was something that would drastically change Julie and Dylans's lives. They were captured by a madman who injected each of them with some Chula nanogenes programmed to dissect them from the inside out. Julie had to watch while Dylan was killed. When he returned to life, discovering that he was Immortal, she didn't have time to enjoy it. The nanongenes were injected into Julie's blood stream. She had to control them with her mutant ability in order to survive. Julie got the nanogenes under control. Dylan and Julie escaped, continuing to seek a way home.
